Everyone talks about cultural relevance but nobody defines it
Everyone talks about cultural relevance but nobody defines it. Cultural Capital FYI is the explainer — what cultural capital actually means, how it works, and why some brands have more of it than others. It is Bourdieu made practical. The site takes Pierre Bourdieu's academic concept of cultural capital and applies it to modern brands, scoring 10 brands on cultural relevance and distilling the framework into 5 actionable principles.
The brands with the most cultural capital aren't the biggest. They're the ones that shape how people think, dress, eat, and live.
Academic ideas need translation to be useful
Bourdieu's framework is brilliant but impenetrable. Scoring real brands against it made the theory click — and made me realise most brand strategists are doing cultural capital analysis without knowing it. The lesson is that the best strategic frameworks already exist in academia. The gap is translation. Taking something rigorous and making it usable without losing what makes it powerful.
