There is a particular kind of leader who is about to become structurally redundant: the one who has successfully delegated all the thinking about new technology to someone else. Not because delegation is wrong, but because you cannot lead a transition you cannot describe. And we are in the middle of a transition that demands description.
Future literacy is the ability to operate effectively in the vocabulary of the technologies that will define the next decade. It doesn't mean writing code. It means understanding enough about how AI systems reason, how biotech platforms work, how networked software compounds, that you can ask useful questions, set meaningful direction, and recognise when you're being bullshitted.
What illiteracy actually costs
The cost of technical illiteracy at leadership level used to be manageable. You hired people who understood the technology, let them build, and made strategic decisions from a position of informed distance. That model worked when the technology was infrastructure, stable enough that you could treat it as a given.
AI doesn't behave like infrastructure. It changes the nature of what's possible faster than any strategic cycle can accommodate. A leader who can't evaluate what an AI system is doing cannot set a useful direction for using one. The gap between what the technologists are building and what the leaders are authorising is already producing costly misalignments, in product direction, in hiring, in positioning and in missed capability.
You don't fix that gap by hiring smarter technologists. You fix it by raising the floor on what leadership is expected to understand.
Literacy is learnable
This is a learnable skill, not a fixed aptitude. I've worked with leaders across 15+ years who had no technical background and became genuinely fluent in new technologies by committing to a specific, narrow practice: use the tools themselves, read the outputs critically, build simple things with your own hands. Not to become an engineer. To understand what engineers are building well enough to direct it.
The path to AI literacy is not a course. It's a commitment to engaging with the tools directly, frequently, and with genuine curiosity about where they fail as much as where they succeed. You learn more about an AI system from one prompt that produces a bad output than from any explainer about how large language models work in theory.
Why this is an optimist's belief
Framing future literacy as a burden misses the point. The ability to speak the language of what's coming is not a chore. It's access. It is the difference between being a participant in the next economy and being someone things happen to.
The leaders I find most energising to work with are not the ones who already know everything. They're the ones who have decided, at some identifiable moment, that they are going to understand this, and who have started the process of building that understanding regardless of where they started from.
That decision, made early enough, compounds in exactly the same way that any literacy does. By the time the stakes are highest, they're fluent. Everyone else is still sounding out the words.
